History

In 883 a charter of Conques mentions a " ministerium calvomontense", a religious place with an ecclesiastical service, which concerns the St Michael chapel in the first walls of the castle. The date of building of this castle goes back to IXth or WIIIth century.

The first known lord is Hugues de Calmont who lived in the middle of XIth century. He made donations of Lévinhac church to Aniane abbey and of Perse monastery to Conques abbey.

The lineage of Calmont's lasted until 1299 with the Rodez bishop Raymond de Calmont's death. The castle passed on Castelnau-Bretenoux's family, then in 1530 on Clermont-Lodève's.

Situation

The castle takes place on the summit of a basaltic " neck", exit of a lava chimney like the Vermus's.

At an altitude of 535m, it is overhanging the Lot river for 200m, with a general east-west plane, parallel to the valley. It has a parallelepiped form of 40m long and 22m wide.

This situation does it an exceptional watching point on the whole valley.

Walls and Gates

Castle had been surrounded in XVth century with an outside wall equipped with 8 towers. It was built in basaltic freestones and was 180m long with 1m50 of thickness walls.

These walls were probably built between the wall of the castle and first walls too much long which surrounded ruins of building still visible, in particular the chapel.

Outside walls had 3 entrances: a main door and 2 " poternes" (little doors). The main door was in the north-west wall below the donjon. The strictly speaking entrance was composed of a fortified set with doors, " barbacane" and drawbridge. These fortifications made around the " longe" tower an accumulation of obstacles to protect the access to the castle yard.
The south-west " poterne" had a raised access equipped with a wooden tilted plane to enter goods in the castle because wagons can't go more far.
Flat Rooms
It was, on two floors, the main dwelling corps situated on right side getting into the yard of the castle, where we reach by little stairs. It was probably the dining room, lighted by a window with leaves and an iron gate on the northern wall. In the western end of the room was a bedroom lighted by a window looking onto the yard. In the other end was a second room with stairs to access to the lower floor.

the lower floor

This floor consisted of the kitchen, situated under the dining room, with a freestones chimney and probably an oven. In the western end was a room used like storeroom and lumber room. In eastern end was a room with access to the tank.

" Longe" Tower and Donjon
the " Longe" tower
As shows it name, it's a watch tower (from Latin word " longus": faraway). The position permitted it to have an excellent point of view on the town and the valley.
In XVIIth century it sheltered the archives of the castle.
the Donjon
Named " Tour Grosse" (big tower), the donjon is a square tower with 11 m on each side. The ground floor consists on an arched cellar. The first floor is paved and has a chimney well as a washbasin in the northern wall.

The second floor also has a chimney. It is lighted by a wide lattice window in the western wall and has an arched niche with a lateral seat, lighted by a little window in northern wall. The two floors are separated with a wooden floorboards and linked with stairs clung to the wall.

The roofing probably was in " lauzes" or tiles.
